Mean age was 27.76 years, and mean age at adoption was 2.26 years. The sample consisted of 177 young adults domestic adoptees. Our hypotheses are three: (1) adoptees will show worse adjustment in adulthood in comparison to non-adoptees, (2) the presence of psychopathological symptoms will be directly related to an HRQOL impairment, and (3) though resilience and self-esteem, also receive negative effects of psychopathological symptoms, they will offer a buffering effect on HRQOL. The second aim is to test the proposed model ( Figure 1). The first aim is to analyze the psychological adjustment of a group of adult adoptees. This study analyzes the relationship between adult adoptees’ psychopathological symptoms and their perceived mental related HRQOL. Some studies showed that the presence of psychopathological symptoms predicts a lower HRQOL, both in its physical and mental components. The role of psychopathological symptoms in relation to HRQOL has been less studied. In relation to influencing factors, previous research evidenced the impact of chronic medical conditions on HRQOL (Khunkaew et al., 2018 Mewes et al., 2016 Sánchez-Sandoval et al., 2019). Quality of life is a multidimensional concept, which is also affected by a wide range of variables, including physical health, psychological conditions, personal beliefs, social relationships, and the relationship to significant environmental characteristics ( World Health Organization 1999).

Although there is a trend about trying to identify adjustment difficulties among these people, there is little evidence focused on the study of HRQOL in adults who were adopted during their childhood (except studies such as Oke et al., 2015). Recent studies show that two out of three are at normal range concerning the presence of psychopathological symptoms and around 10% are at clinical range ( Sánchez-Sandoval & Melero, 2018).

However, far from being able to generalize, young adult adoptees are a heterogeneous group. Adopted people are at certain risk to show psychological adjustment and mental health difficulties ( Barroso et al., 2017 Melero & Sánchez-Sandoval, 2017). This paper aims to provide evidence about the study of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adult adoptees. This paper supports the inclusion of resilience-building programs as a health promotion strategy, especially in the case of psychopathology, and among post-adoption services. The presence of positive psychological resources, such as resilience and self-esteem, causes psychopathological dimensions, such as anxiety, depression, phobias, or psychoticism to decrease. As a conclusion, empirical evidence of the impact of mental health difficulties on the HRQOL of adopted people is shown. The multiple mediation model shows that, in addition to the direct association between psychopathological symptomatology and a poorer HRQOL, resilience, and self-esteem have a buffering effect on this relationship. Measures of psychopathological symptoms (SCL-90), quality of life (SF-12), self-esteem (RSES), and resilience (BRS) were taken.

The sample consisted of 177 young adopted adults (mean age 27.67). This paper analyses psychological adjustment and checks a suggested theoretical model that relates the presence of psychopathological symptoms to a worse health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adult adoptees.
